Monday 2-28-2011
Got in a handful of large and jumbos for tonight
so we can offer them as single portion dinners. I
did just get off the phone with the fish house on
Florida's west coast and lined up stone crabs for
tomorrow and Wednesday. Yay!

We have all you can eat medium stone crabs
tonight but the large and jumbos can be offered
only as one and two pound dinners. I don't know
yet what's available for Monday.

Tuesday 2-22-2011
Just got a call from a regular reader up in West
Palm... update my blog! And YES! We just
received mediums and large in enough quantity to
offer the all you can eat special as well as single
portion dinners. Jumbos and colossal came in as
well, but I'm going to throw them all together and
sell them as one and two pound jumbos.

Monday 2/21 update: just got the call from the fish
house, we should have plenty of mediums
tomorrow, a fair amount of large and a few
jumbos.

Unfortunately I have to report there are no stone
crabs for tonight. I am waiting for the call from the
fish house right now telling me what today's catch
is grading out as and how much we will be
receiving tomorrow. Will keep you posted...

Friday 2-18-2011
Just received plenty of medium and large for
tonight so we will be doing all you can eat on
those sizes as well as single portion dinners. As far
as jumbos, only a few pounds came in, so those
will go strictly as one and two pound dinners. The
good news on the jumbos... they include a few
pounds of colossal claws so the first couple of
plates of jumbos will really be colossal. I'm not
planning it that way, I'm just offering to buy as
much as they're willing to sell.

I know the last few days have been pretty thin for
stone crabs, but we're expecting enough to do all
you can eat tonight on medium and large.

Just got word from the fish house regarding stone
crabs... nearly nothing caught for tomorrow. I wish

Happy Valentine's Day!
I wish I could report we found a supplier to bring
in lots and lots of fresh stone crabs for today but
the truth is all we have for tonight is a few pounds
of mediums and jumbos which are going to go fast
as one and two pound dinners. I truly wish it was
otherwise.
We should get stone crabs tomorrow... they are
out fishing for them today.

Sunday 2-13-11
It has been very busy of late and hard to keep
enough stone crabs coming. Today we have 50
lbs medium, 25 lbs each of large and jumbo. This
means we're officially offering only one and two
pound dinners. Unofficially,for guests actually
seated at the table, I will see if there is enough
stone crabs to offer all you can eat.
I'm still waiting to hear if anybody has stone crabs
for Monday, Valentine's day, but so far all I'm
getting is silence.

We're well supplied with medium and large for
tonight and tomorrow, but the jumbos have to be
offered only as single portion dinners.

Thursday 2-3-2011
We have plenty of medium and large stone crabs
for tonight, but only 20 lbs jumbos came in so
jumbos can only be offered as one and two pound
dinners. Friday should bring more stone crabs,
including enough jumbos for all you can eat on
Friday and Saturday. Sunday too, but this Sunday
is Super Bowl Sunday and we're one of the places
that has only one TV, so we don't get very busy
on Super Bowl.
Of course, there are the 13 bar seats that have a
good view of our flat screen TV and having all you
can eat stone crab and snow crab legs while
watching Super Bowl is almost as good as being
at the Super Bowl!
Plus, I'll be here too. ;)

There's good and bad news for stone crabs. First
the bad.
All we can offer for tonight is one and two pound
dinners on mediums. This cold front that just
passed through (and made this beautiful day we
have today!) is making the supply side of the crab
equation under balanced.
However... the good news is the beautiful day
today should (and I emphasize should) mean
plenty of stone crab claws for tomorrow and the
weekend. The tiny bit of tarnish on this good news
is they will probably come at a little bit higher price.
I'll post in the morning once I know more for sure.

Sadly, I have to report we have only a handful of
mediums and jumbos for tonight which are offered
as one and two pound dinners until they're gone.
As far as tomorrow, so far I can only line up a few
pounds of medium and large which will once again
be offered only as one and two pound dinners
while they last, etc, etc.
I wish the situation was different but the cold
weather on the west coast of Florida is simply
keeping a lot of fishing boats in port. As far as the
Keys; well they don't produce quite as much stone
crabs as they used to. Factor that with You Know
Who on Miami Beach controlling the Keys
production and the result is a severe shortage on
the supply side as compared to the demand side in
the South Florida stone crab economy equation.

Just confirmed with stone crab driver via cell
phone, we will be receiving fresh Florida stone
crab claws this morning. We will off the mediums
and the large as all-you-can-eat dinners as well as
single portion dinners, but there's only 20 lbs of
jumbos coming so those can only be offered as
single portion dinners tonight... while they last.

Just got done weighing in and checking a boat
load of medium and large stone crabs. There were
a few pounds of jumbo as well, but the jumbos
must be restricted to one and two pound dinners
while the medium and large can go for all you can
eat as well as one and two pound dinners.
And a reminder... the two pound dinner is a lot of
crab, so you we do permit guests to order the two
pound dinner and then decide if they want to
upgrade it into an all you can eat dinner.

jumbos for tonight. That's bad enough, but I just
got off the phone with my crab guy and the wind
and rain is blowing so bad on the west coast of
Florida almost nobody is out fishing. They might
be able to send a handful of claws for tomorrow, a
few pounds of medium, large and jumbos but that
means, once again, we will only have enough stone
crabs to offer single portion dinners.
I do have feelers out for Keys stone crabs, but too
often all they offer are Joe's rejects or frozen,
especially in times like this when supply can't come
close to demand... but I'll post here as soon as I
hear anything positive.

pound dinner) We could've taken some frozen but
I stay away from buying frozen product.

know they're in.

hard to find anyone who was out fishing this past
weekend. Should be getting more stone crabs in
tomorrow but there's still a big question mark
hovering over that statement, especially the

First things first. Happy and healthy and
prosperous New Year to everyone and a big loud
THANK YOU for another wonderful year from
everyone at Catfish Deweys!
...Next most important thing:
All us southerners have a tradition about New
Years Day. We have a serving of black eyed peas
for good luck and prosperity for the new year. If
you really want to do it right, have some collards
with them; the collards represent paper money and
the black eyed peas coins and as we all know...
we can all use a bit more prosperity going into
2011. Tony is fixing today's batch with hog jowls
(just think smoked pork if this seems a little
adventurous for you northerners) and he's cooking
down the collards too. Might's'well have some
catfish or fried oysters with 'em! :)
We do have stone crabs for today, but they're
large and jumbos... not enough mediums to even
advertise them here, but if you want to start the
New Year off with fresh Florida stone crabs,
might as well do it up with large and jumbo claws!
Large stone crab claws and a bowl of black eyed
peas and a side of collards... I think that
combination can't be beat for good luck, health
and prosperity.
