Friday 1-19-2007 Posted by Dewey Jr. 9:47 AM We have received plenty of mediums for tonight, and expect more tomorrow, but there were no jumbos in today's delivery. For tomorrow we expect more mediums, and possible large, but there is still a shortage of jumbos. The month of February has always been a time when supply was hard pressed to keep pace with demand, so I wonder if that phenomenon is beginning to manifest itself a bit early. I'll know more about that after this front passes through this weekend. ________________________ ____________________ Wednesday 1-17-2007 Posted by Dewey Jr. 11:20 AM I know we didn't get very many jumbos yesterday, but for today through the weekend we should stay fairly well stocked on jumbos, as well as large and mediums. I'd also like to take a moment to thank Linda Pearl from Cruisemates.com for a very nice note in her article. "You could spend a month this fair city, and still have restaurants to try! On my last visit in June I was taken to Catfish Dewey's ...... The shrimp here was literally the best I have ever eaten, food is abundant and the menu variety will please everyone. .... Supposed to stay breezy all weekend, and we know what that means. High seas... big, choppy waves the stone crab fishermen avoid... but I have stone crabs lined up for all weekend. As long as they really materialize, we should be well stocked all through the weekend. There's already a good sign... today's have already been delivered. Of course that means checking them, and a couple of large claws, cracked and then dipped in Sylvia's mustard sauce make a fine breakfast for a long Friday's business. :) Hmmm... breakfast? Nahhhh. Opening time Monday through Saturday at 11:30 AM is just fine. Some large and jumbos too, but those will be limited to one and two pound dinners... only the mediums can be offered as all you can eat dinners. I believe there will be enough to get through the night, but if you are of the "better safe than sorry" school of thought, then come earlier, rather than later. I figure the stone crab fishermen did, because there are no stone crabs for today. Zero, zip, nada. Best I can figure, anybody serving stone crabs today are selling stone crabs caught last week. As far as tomorrow, I won't know until later tonight. Some boats are out, but they won't get in until dark and cooking, sorting and grading happens after that. Then they are allocated out. I'll post up here as soon as I know what we are allocated, if any. I wish it were otherwise, but this particular moment has demand high and supply low. _______________________ ____________________ Saturday 12-23-2006 Posted by Dewey Jr. 1:51 PM We just received a modest amount of mediums and an even more modest amount of jumbos. No large. We'll do the mediums as all you can eat dinners and the jumbos as one or two pound dinners until they sell out. So come earlier, rather than later for stone crabs. I wish it were otherwise, I truly do, but this is all I could find for today. We will be closed Chrismas Day, Monday, December 25th. All that bad weather we've been having seems to have passed by, and looking outside right now, the bright sunshine today is a great metaphor for my own feeling well again today. Unfortunately, though, the past few days of bad weather meant stone crabs were tough to find. We should all know what that means... stone crabs are going to be less abundant because of the higher waves and winds keeping the boats tied up. Now here's the good news... we've lined up enough deliveries today and more tomorrow to get us through the weekend. They're ordered, but Monday seems to be the difficult day to find any fresh stone crabs. _______________________ ________________ Friday 12-1-2006 Posted by Dewey Jr. 10:06 AM I am feeling the first little tremors in the market as far as overall availability of stone crabs. Mediums have been short, and a reader has offered a fairly valid theory of his own. David K. thinks: The "shortage" of mediums may be a result of last season's small harvest. Many of the claws that would have been harvested then, had another year to grow. I am sure that the average claw weight is greater this year than it has been in many years. I can't imagine that a fisherman who went to all the trouble to set and haul up traps, would throwback any claws that were of legal size. By the time the crabs are in the boat, much of the expenditure and work has already been done. It's not as if you could put a sign on your crab traps that said "No Mediums Allowed", and even if you could, stone crabs don't read very well - they are rather "thick" and "hard headed"... I think there may be something to that as well. As far as availability for this weekend, we look good, although I am still awaiting a callback from our main supplier. You all may wish to consider that this Sunday is the first Sunday of the month and we have our live country show scheduled. We are booked solid, so we have only the 1/3 portion of our seating available for walk-in guests, and that means a manic Sunday. Some folks love that kind of energy, but I also realize some folks don't, so if you're looking for stone crabs with a shorter wait in line, you might consider tonight or Saturday. Evidently, there were no fishermen out Sunday in that heavy wind. Since we sold out last night, this means we have no stone crabs of any size today or tonight. We reopen Friday at 11:30 AM so all that leftover turkey can wait a day or two. ;-) I have to say something about our weather. It is so beautiful right now. Almost no humidity with temperatures in the 50's at night and upper 60's in the day. It is such a wonderful feeling having cool crisp air lifted by a slow breeze blow across your skin with a bright warm sun shining down. If you are up north and reading this, you need to make plans to spend at least a couple of days down here this winter. It is sublime. It is paradise.
